From The Horse’s Mouth Magazine was founded in the 1990s by current Editor Dean Charlton, who had the vision to provide a community-based magazine for people to express their creative talents in a positive, non-discriminatory environment.
The magazine welcomes content submitted from people from all backgrounds, and Dean particularly encourages people who have disabilities or ill-health to contribute after he found himself with physical and mental health conditions which affected his ability to work, and found the magazine gave him a way to feel useful and make positive, creative contributions to society after being “written off” by mainstream society.
Dean is affected by Bipolar Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and in the past has had pneumonia (twice), cancer, a bacterial ulcer in his eye, and on the 1st of February 2024, had a heart attack.
Prior to his formal diagnosis of Bipolar and OCD, Dean self-medicated by binge drinking alcohol. Following diagnosis, and gaining greater understanding of his conditions, he chose to abstain from alcohol consumption and has been tee-total for over 27 years.
Dean is honest and open about his conditions, and how they affect him, and stands as a living testament that one can still make positive contributions to society, and achieve one’s goals, even if one has disability and/or chronic ill-health.
In August 2025, Dean completed his first book, Warts And Almost All, an autobiography containing warm memories from his life, alongside the struggles he had with mental health and societies attitudes towards those with disabilities and mental health conditions.
Warts And Almost All is exclusively available as a digital book for purchase and download on this website for a minimum recommended donation of £5.00.

From Paper To Digital
From The Horses Mouth Magazine first existed in paper form but escalating printing costs made it impossible to continue publication. Determined to keep the spirit of the project going, Dean fulfilled a life-long ambition of recording two albums of his original compositions and songs, which were arranged by a close friend of his, and featured local Yorkshire musicians.
These albums can be accessed by navigating to the Music section on this website.
It was at this time that his friend suggested creating an online version of the magazine, and built a website for the magazine to be re-launched from, and thus From The Horse’s Mouth Magazine was reborn and revamped for the digital era.
The magazine is a platform for anyone to use and will keep going for a long time with help from kind people like yourself. If you would like to make a contribution to the costs of keeping this magazine going for years to come, please donate here.
Best wishes,
Dean and the From The Horses Mouth Magazine Team.
