Ingredients:
8 oz of self-raising flour
4 oz of margarine
4 oz of castor sugar
1 egg
3-4 tablespoons of milk
1 level teaspoon of cocoa
1 peeled, medium-sized apple
8 oz of chocolate glace icing
Few chopped nuts if desired
Method:
Cream the fat and sugar together and gradually add the beaten egg and some of the milk, beating well between each addition of liquid. Fold in the flour sifted with the cocoa and mix to a soft, dropping consistency, add a little more milk if necessary.
Spread half the mixture in a 7-inch cake tin and grate the raw apple on to the surface. Place the remaining mixture on top evenly. Bake in a moderate hot oven at 400 F/gas mark 6 for about 45 minutes. When cold, ice with chocolate glace icing, and if desired, sprinkle with chopped nuts.
