My Not Very Serious Stars – August 2026

Scorpio 24 Oct โ 22 Nov
Today you may fall off your metaphorical horse and need to get right back on it. Remember life is a trot and not a gallop. A man who stutters will come into your life and will give you some information that will change everything. Also, a problem may seem unsurmountable, but do not suffer in silence, and reach out for help. Use your insomnia to get some things done.Sagittarius 23 Nov โ 21 Dec
A person you didnโt really rate will shock you when you learn some new things about them. Itโs time to drop your bravado and show your magnificent, true colours. You tend to put yourself down too much as your contribution to life has been immense, and more importantly, you have a lot of love in your life. But stop telling porkies and being a lustful pig. Shower!Capricorn 22 Dec โ 20 Jan
An old virgin may impregnate your narrow mind with some wonderful new ideas this month. Consider taking on a new challenge. It is time to stop throwing your cap at every attractive person who comes along and have more self-respect. Someone who talks like a machine gun will annoy you, but do you no harm. Remember that the world is your welk.Aquarius 21 Jan โ 19 Feb
Trot into town and make a pig of yourself as you deserve a treat. You will be excited by someone with ginger hair, which is okay, as bit of ginger does you good. Someone will claim to have all the answers, but remember that no one really knows why we are here. It is also time to realise that no one really cares about your sexuality, so, what is there to be proud of?Pisces 20 Feb โ 20 Mar
Wrinkles have begun to appear around your eyes, but at least youโre not in a war zone. You also may feel under a lot of pressure at the moment, but donโt lose your temper and boil over as nothing is that important. A financial windfall is coming your way and you will finally be able to settle your debts and plan for the future. Love will come out-of-the-blue soon. Wait.Aries 21 Mar โ 20 Apr
Be patient with a loved one as they need time to untangle a mess they are in. You may fancy a bit of toffee but do you fancy paying for a new filling? You know you have a masterpiece in you, but are you going to do anything about it this month? A hospitalised friend needs your support this week so donโt let them down as they have never let you down. Smile more often.Taurus 21 Apr โ 21 May
An individual who is mad about northern soul, will dance into your life and give you some free, important lessons. Take down the walls that people can barely see over and let people come in, and enrich, your life. Also stop being the joker as love is a serious matter and no laughing matter. Good news will cheer you up and make you walk with a spring in your step.Gemini 22 May โ 21 Jun
Wear your best knickers tonight in case you need to impress your date tonight โ even if youโre not sure of your sexuality. Watch what youโre doing as you need to be eating porridge and not doing it. The status quo doesnโt really rock your world but just do your own thing and chip away at things you think are wrong. A holy man will unexpectantly bear his soul to you.Cancer 22 Jun โ 23 Jul
This month, be careful how you try to lose weight and maybe choose a more natural way. You will come across someone who is extremely rude and obnoxious, but make allowances as they are hurting. You may hate your neighbourโs nocturnal noise, but have you forgotten what itโs like to be young? Stop thinking you are aristocracy as weโre really only paupers.Leo 24 Jul โ 23 Aug
You need more champagne-moments in your life as you have worked very hard for little reward. But donโt worry as good times lie ahead for you. However, be very careful as a so-called friend will do something that causes you problems. Happily, A tiny woman will bring some magic into your world and you will realise that size is not everything. Eat brown bread.Virgo 24 Aug โ 23 Sep
Love will barge into your life and change your whole outlook. It is time also to acknowledge that you donโt just have to just waltz through everything. Youโll be shocked to learn how hard a friendโs life really is, so, do what you can to help them. Maybe try and trump someone who thinks they hold all the aces. Keep on pushing that rock up the mountain as thatโs how it is.Libra 24 Sep โ 23 Oct
Love can indeed make your life – or leave you in tatters, so, be careful with it. It is written in the stars that you will eventually be rewarded for all your hard work. It is a good time to buy some stilts if you fancy looking down on everyone for a short while. Now is maybe the time to consider booking a skiing holiday if you want something to look forward to in winter.

Juneโs World – August 2026

Time for another article! I do apologise if I sometimes repeat myself but when youโve written so many articles, itโs hard to always keep track!
In this article, Iโll write about my childhood in the Potteries in Castleford. I used to love living there. There was always a lot going on. Iโd be about 11 or 12 years old and lived amongst a lot of interesting people. My grandma and grandad lived two doors away from our house. I lived with my parents and my four sisters, so, our house was always full of noise.
I used to go and visit old people and ask them if they needed any jobs doing or help with their shopping. A lot of them needed help, so, I volunteered to do this and run errands as many of them had bad legs. They let me keep the change from shopping which was usually a few pennies and occasionally a three-penny bit. I was always grateful for any money as I was very young.
My grandparents would ask me to put on bets for them at the bookies. I had to wait outside the shop and ask people to put on bets for me as I was obviously too young to do this myself. If they won, they would give me a three-penny bit. My grandma would also often go to Stockton-on-Tees to see her second family. My grandad didnโt mind as they had an unconventional type of marriage and often didnโt go out together; he liked going to the pictures (cinema) but they are all closed now โ the nearest one is at Freeport which is a couple of miles from Castleford.
In Castleford, in Smithson Square, there was an old lady called Mrs Richardson. One day, I was playing netball with a girl called June Evans and Mrs Richardson saw us and asked me to go to the shops for her. She said her son was working and that she couldnโt go herself. She needed a loaf of bread and some potatoes. She also said she would soon be alone as her son was getting married and she would need someone to help her, and that, if I did so, she would give me some money. I said that I would ask my mother who agreed as it was quite near to home. My mother never had much money so I gave her what Mrs Richardson gave me.
I started going shopping for Mrs Richardson and once her son was married, she wanted me to stay and keep her company. So, every day, after school, I visited her home until one day she said she was expecting someone to visit her, and asked me go down the pitch-black cellar. But instead of fully descending, I sat listening on the top two steps. I could hear every word and soon realised that Mrs Richardson was in fact a money lender and that is why I had had to disappear.
Another time I told Mrs Richardson that I was going to Stockton with my grandma and would visit her on my return. Mrs Richardson asked me to bring her a teapot and gave me some money to bring her one from the market there. I went to Stockton and bought her a nice white teapot; soon we were on the train and was pleased with her purchase, and, when I thought I would examine it, it slipped through my fingers and broke. I was devastated and didnโt know how I could possibly now face Mrs Richardson.
Once home, when it was dark, I wrote a little note with the appropriate amount of money and shoved it through her letterbox. I was a very nervous child and didnโt know what else to do. I didnโt have the courage to visit Mrs Richardson again. The children with whom I played, told her of my predicament and she said I was a silly girl. But I never plucked up the courage to go see her again.
Bye for now. Love June. X.

Brendaโs Wildlife Corner – August 2026

The otter is an interesting, carnivorous mammal that has been hunted for its pelts and used by humans to aid fishing in places like Southern Bangladesh. There are 14 known species of otter which are semi-aquatic and are both freshwater and marine. It appears in various mythologies like Norse and North American mythology.
Physically, the otter has short limbs and slim bodies with powerful webbed feet and sharp claws, that are excellent for fishing. Like a seal, it possesses the ability to hold its breath underwater. Notably, the sea otter is the only one of these mammals not to have a long, muscular tail.
Depending on the type of otter, its size ranges from 2.0 to 5.9 foot and can weigh up to around 99 lb in weight. The smallest otter is the Asian, small-clawed otter and the largest are the Giant otter and the Sea otter. An otter has very soft, insulated fur which is protected by an outer layer of long guard hairs which serve to trap air, keep them dry and warm, and buoyant under water. They are generally, also very playful using natural slides and amusing themselves with stones.
The gestation period of the otter varies from 60-80 days with the young remaining in the family for around a year. They have longevity and can live up to 16 years. Their diet is mainly composed of fish, shellfish and sometimes frogs, birds and eels โ depending on the species. However, they rarely attack humans unless they are provoked.
An otter lives in a den that is called a holt or couch while male otters are called dogs or boars, females bitches or sows and the offspring are called pups or cubs. Collective nouns for otters are: Bevy, family, lodge or romp. The holt is built under tree roots and sometimes lined with moss and grass.
After two months, a pup can actually swim. It is cared for by the bitch, dog and older offspring. A female otter becomes sexually mature before the male, 2 and 3 years respectively.
Food is very important to an otter with most of them hunting 3 to 5 hours each day, and nursing mothers hunting for up to 8 hours a day. A Eurasian otter, for example, must eat 15% of its body weight each day while the Sea otter (depending on the water temperature) needs to consume 20 to 25% of its bodyweight daily.
The otter is an active hunter, chasing prey in the water and scouring the beds of rivers, lakes and seas for food. Most preside near water but some like Sea otters use stones to break open shellfish on their bellies. Otters are largely solitary though some live in groups.
As already mentioned, humans have long posed a threat to otters through hunting with arrows, darts, nets, snares, traps and guns. People have coveted their pelts and tails which have been used for menโs clothing. Fur has even been used to make mittens for children.
So, otters are a fascinating part of the animal kingdom and every effort should be made to preserve them and enable them to flourish.

Gig Review โ OMD – August 2026

On Wednesday 8th July 2026 I went to see Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, better known as OMD for a second time. The venue on this occasion being Bradford Live and I was accompanied by my good friend Chris. Support was provided by Andrew Cushin, a singer-songwriter from the North East. It was brought to my attention he had played the Grayston Unity here in Halifax the previous evening. I found him to be fairly entertaining with a couple of good songs. The final track he played was probably the highlight although, I donโt know the title.
This was my second time seeing OMD. The first time was in Leeds in 2024 however, I was unwell during that gig and so, I was really looking forward to seeing them again with a clean bill of health.
This tour has been dubbed as the โSummer of Hitsโ tour. As it turned out, they performed nineteen songs of which, I knew sixteen very well, one song a little bit and there were just two tracks that I wasnโt familiar with.
The show was split into two halves effectively. The first part was described as โAtomic Ranchโ. The opening song โIsotypeโ was one of the songs I had not heard previously. I would describe it as a typical OMD track. Synth heavy and very electronic. The second unfamiliar track โVeruschkaโ opened what was classed as the second half of the show, which was allocated the name โThe Rock Drillโ. It reminded me of how much the band are influenced by German outfit Kraftwerk. I really liked โIsotypeโ but wasnโt too keen on โVeruschkaโ. I would say the latter song was the weakest on the night.
The other track I that I wasnโt really familiar with was โHistory of Modern, Part 2โ. Iโve got to say I really enjoyed this. It was joyous and had the crowd bouncing along to it.
The band had plenty of hits to select from and I was delighted when they played โTalking Loud and Clearโ as that had been omitted on the previous occasion that I saw them.
They went on to perform all their classic hits including the fantastic โEnola Gayโ as the final track before they went off and then returned for an encore.
The three tracks included during the encore were โWalking on the Milky Wayโ, โPandoraโs Boxโ, which I recorded partly for my girlfriend as it is her favourite OMD track, and the closer was โElectricityโ which was their breakthrough UK Top 40 chart hit. It seemed appropriate they should end with that number.
Other highlights were โTesla Girlsโ, โJoan of Arcโ, โMaid of Orleansโ, โIf You Leaveโ and โLocomotionโ. To be fair all their singles are of a decent standard. In my opinion, the only significant singles that were missing on the night were โGenetic Engineeringโ and โTelegraphโ. These were ones I would have liked to hear.
Overall, this was a really enjoyable evening in a good venue. The crowd seemed to be very into it all and Chris said it was one of the best gigs he had been to. One surprising aspect was that the show was over at 10pm however, they did come on stage at 8:30pm so, it didnโt feel we had been shortchanged.
I would rate the show as four out of five stars. Iโm seeing them again in August in Rochdale.
